If there’s one thing I would tell my younger self – it would be to sleep.
Sleep plays a vital role in our overall health and well-being. When we’re young, we don’t take advantage of the benefits of naps and early sleep even when our bodies need it the most. We all have our own body clock as well as a sleep cycle as we age. This still does not take away from the occasional midday nap needed for a refresh. When our body talks to us, we should listen.
With sleep, our brains are very active. We switch between sleep patterns around every 90 minutes of sleep, with the shortest time being our deepest, most vivid sleep. Every night we strive to get the best sleep we can, but more times than not we cannot make ourselves fall asleep.
Since I was young, I’ve had trouble sleeping due to my mind always moving and at times not knowing the proper sleep routine to wind down with. Genetics can also play a role in this (so talk to your family about their sleeping habits as well!). With that, I have learned how to create the right conditions for a good night’s rest – for my mind and what’s around me.
See below for the remedies you can use to have a better sleep:
- Pay attention to what you are eating and drinking (try not to have large meals prior to sleep or caffeine)
- Try peaceful remedies like baths or showers prior to lying down (adding essential oils like lavender and calming oils to your bath or shower water also help)
- Include physical activities like yoga in your routine to bring your body to a centered calm zone
- Listening to rain/calm sounds or music to aid in a restful environment
Sleep helps restore us physically and mentally and it is something we simply cannot live without!
